Identification

Body quite elongate with body depth 3.3-3.8 times in SL. Upper and lower jaws with canine teeth; those in lower jaw with 4-8 large canines in the inner row and small teeth in the outer row. Palatine teeth villiform. Preopercle edge with serrations. Lower rear margin of preopercle with 2-3 small ridges. Dorsal fins well separated. Anterior margin of pelvic fin, anterior edge of second dorsal, and anterior anal fin spines with serrations.

Color

Silvery on body with dark scale margins dorsally. A dark tip on the first dorsal fin.

Size

Ranges from 40-122mm SL.

Habitat

Continental shelf from 87-544m.

Range

North Carolina to Suriname, including the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. Also the southwestern Atlantic from Brazil to Uruguay (Figueiredo et al., 2002).
