Identification

Body moderately elongate with a slightly convex forehead profile. Mouth small. Preopercle finely serrate. Dorsal and anal fins with scales on spiny portion but no scales on soft portion. There are 8 scale rows above the lateral line at the first dorsal spine and 15 below it.

Color

Body silvery blue with numerous brassy to bronze spots on the body and upper head. Usually with an obvious bronze lateral stripe from snout to caudal fin. Can display indistinct dusky body bars. Fins pale to dusky.

Size

Maximum size to 40cm TL.

Habitat

Coastal waters over hard and soft bottoms. Also found in estuarine areas.

Range

Continental coasts from Honduras to Brazil.

Other Notes

The frequently used Orthopristis ruber (Cuvier, 1830) is restricted to southeastern Brazil and are largely allopatric with a contact zone off eastern Brazil.
