Body and most of head completely covered in deciduous scales. Lower jaw with teeth minute to missing entirely.

Color

Body various shades of brown, with dark gill membranes and peritoneum.

Size

Maximum size to 560mm SL.

Habitat

Mesopelagic to bathypelagic from 66-2166m. Smaller specimens in shallower waters.

Known from the Gulf Stream region, the central Atlantic, and the eastern Gulf of Mexico.
