Gill Rakers:
Body elongate and flattened ventrally, with four rows of thick, heavy scales forming an armor-like covering. Head wide, tapering gradually rearward. Head with flattened duck-bill snout about the width of eyes and squared-off at tip. Rostral projections relatively short (~eye size), robust, and almost parallel. Head heavily armored. Edges of snout and head with small spines and undulations. Edge of head not expanded greatly on the cheek, with large backwards pointing cheek and opercular spines. Large spine at nostril. Eye large. Interorbital distance relatively wide. Anterior edge of first body plate even with or anterior to pelvic girdle. Lip barbel single and long. Chin barbels numerous (32-42), in several clusters, and fairly short. Dorsal fins separated: the first small and second long-based. Anal fin about the same length as dorsal fin. Pectoral fins small and fan-like with two long free rays that are used to interact/crawl along the seafloor. Pelvic fins small and widely separated under pectoral base. Caudal fin truncate.
Color
Variably pale yellowish with orange blotches or reddish with random yellow blotches. Belly white. Dorsal and caudal fin body colored with a broad red border. Anal fin pale with a red border. Pectoral fin body colored with a thin white border. Pelvic fin white. Eye golden.
Size
Maximum size to 28cm SL.
Habitat
Found on soft bottoms from 55-550m.
Range
S. Florida to Venezuela, including the Gulf of Mexico.
