Stegastes pictus

Common Name

Yellowtip Damselfish

Year Described

Castelnau, 1855

Other Notes

This species has long been confused with Stegastes partitus, but is distinctly patterned and is only found off Brazil. Another species, Stegastes lubbocki, from Ascension Island is likely synonymous and differs mainly by having more yellow on the rear dorsal fin being retained into adulthood (versus the dorsal tail lobe in the Brazilian population).
